SERVICE AREA 2A, BASS LAKE (PINES TRACT)
Service Area 2A, Bass Lake, is located in Madera County
on the north shore of Bass Lake in the area of Roads 274
and 434. The district provides sewer service to about 978
residential and commercial connections utilizing nearly
1,440 EDUs (equivalent dwelling units). Very simply, an
EDU is a measure of capacity that allows us to track the
plant’s maximum capacity. A home uses 1 EDU, while a business
may use more, depending on the type of business. There are
still about 300 EDUs that are allocated, but not yet connected
to the system.
The system was built in 1974 and consists of a collection
system made of asbestos cement and plastic pipe, 16 raw
sewage pumping stations, grit removal, an activated sludge
treatment process, a chlorine contact tank, a treated water
pumping station, a treated water boost pumping station and
a sprayfield. Some of the collection system is actually
buried in the lakebed and submersed when the lake level
is up. The system operates well, with the exception of some
major holidays when an influx of visitors causes a tremendous
increase in the sewer flows. The lab, in addition to performing
tests for the Bass Lake system, is also used to perform
tests for many other systems in the area.
The treatment plant and high use raw sewage pumping stations
have generator backup. The 4 raw sewage pumping stations
serving the campgrounds do not; however, during the winter,
the campgrounds are empty and the flow is minimal. There
are approximately 100 alarm settings being monitored at
all times. Auto dialers are used to call in alarm conditions
as they occur.
