Simple
Ways You Can Save Water
Saving water is vital, but at the same time quite simple.
There are various things that everyone can do around the
house and yard that will help preserve the water supply
for the future. All of these will save water utility energy
and reduce operating costs.
In the Bathroom
- Check, for leaks in your toilets and repair them.
- Replace high flow toilets with ultra-low flow toilets.
- Check for and repair dripping showerheads.
- Replace old shower heads with low-flow showerheads.*
- Save the "warm-up water" for other uses around your
home or garden.
- Take shorter showers.*
- Use less water in the tub for your baths.*
- Check for and repair dripping faucets.
- Install faucet aerators in bathroom sinks, if you are
not already using them.*
- Turn off the water while you brush your teeth instead
of letting the water run.
- Fill the basin while shaving.*
In the Kitchen
- Keep a bottle of cold water in the refrigerator, rather
than letting the water run until it cools.
- Install faucet aerators in the kitchen sinks, if you
are not already using them.*
- Run your dishwasher with full loads instead of partial
loads.*
- Hand wash your dishes and use a basin to rinse.*
In the Laundry Room
- Run your clothes washer with full loads instead of partial
loads.*
In the Garden
- Use a shut-off nozzle on the hose.
- Use a bucket when washing your car.
- Use a broom to clean off driveways and walkways, rather
than a hose.
- Water your yard early in the morning, or later in the
evening, when the temperatures are cooler and winds are
calm.
- Water plants only when they need it. Not all plants
use the same amount of water. Check your soil before watering.
- When water starts to run off from your yard to the gutter,
stop watering.
- Adjust automatic controllers to irrigate during cooler
parts of the day, and adjust the length of time of watering
to be seasonally appropriate (longer when it is hot, less
when it is cool and humid, and not at all when it rains).
- Check for and repair irrigation system leaks or overspray.
- Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil.
- Select low-water-using plants for the garden.
- Group plants of similar water needs together in your
garden.
- Convert to higher efficiency irrigation systems, such
as microspray and drip, when you can.
- Water deeply and less frequently.
- Check your pool and hot tub for leaks. If you find a
leak, fix it.
- Use a cover for your pool or hot tub.
- Capture runoff and rainwater for use around your garden.
- Use rain sensors (shuts off irrigation when it rains).
Connection to Your Water Utility
- Check for leaks at the water meter and have them fixed.

* These actions will also save you energy, reducing your
energy bill.
