Madera County is an Equal Opportunity employer. Women, ethnic and racial minorities and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be considered without regard to their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, or any other non-job-related factor.

Application Process

Prospective candidates must submit an official Madera County application, along with any additional materials specified on the job announcement, by 5:00 p.m. on the final filing date given on the job announcement. Postmarks, emails, and resumes in lieu of an application are not accepted. Faxed application materials may be accepted under certain circumstances and with prior authorization of the Department of Human Resources. Application materials authorized to be received by facsimile will require that the applicant submit an application with original signature prior to the date of the examination.

Application forms can be obtained by download from this web site, by visiting our office located at 200 West 4th Street in Madera, or by calling (559) 675-7705.

It is important that the information provided on your application is complete and accurate. Incomplete information may result in disqualification from the examination process. Remember that your application is the tool that the Department of Human Resources uses to determine whether you meet the qualifications for the position.

Examination Process

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will generally be invited to participate in the examination process. County examinations are used to identify the best qualified candidates. The examination process may include, but may not be limited to, any combination of the following components:

  • Application Review
  • Education/Experience Rating
  • Written Exercises
  • Multiple Choice/True-False Written Examinations
  • Oral Qualification Appraisals
  • Performance Examinations
  • Oral Presentations

ELIGIBLE LIST: Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list, in rank order based on a calculation of their total score from the examination process. Eligible lists are generally active for a minimum of six months and a maximum of two years. The duration of the eligible list is determined by the Civil Service Commission.

CERTIFICATION: The names of the top five candidates on an eligible list are certified to the department with the vacancy. The department will generally interview each candidate and has the authority to hire any of the candidates certified to them. If more than one vacancy exists within the department, one additional name may be certified for each additional vacancy.

Veteran's Preference

Generally, in open examinations veterans qualifying for preference will, upon attaining a passing score in all phases of the examination process, be given a credit of 5% of the total score, or 10% of the total score if the veteran is disabled. Veteran's preference points are not generally granted in promotional recruitments.

In order to be considered for veteran's preference points, applicants must submit a copy of their DD-214 with their application.

Employment Process

Medical Examination: All prospective employees will be required to submit to a pre-employment physical examination, once a conditional job offer has been made. The medical examination will be conducted by a physician selected by the County without charge to the prospective employee. Some positions may require a psychological evaluation.

Appointment: To comply with the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, Madera County verifies that all new employees are either United States Citizens or aliens authorized to work in the United States. All new employees are required to take the loyalty oath as required by the State of California. Some positions may require that the employee be fingerprinted. Certain positions may require polygraph.

Probationary Period: New employees are required to successfully complete a probationary period as the final step in the examination process. The duration of the probation period is one year. If performance is not satisfactory, employees may be terminated without any right of appeal.
