The Childhood Lead Prevention Program provides education services to the community to increase awareness of lead poisoning. The Public Health Department works in cooperation with the Environmental Health Department in identifying childhood lead exposures.
Once a child is determined to be a lead poisoning case, both a Public Health Nurse from the Public Health Department and a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, and Certified Lead Inspector/Assessor from the Environmental Health Department, visit the child’s home.
The Public Health Nurse counsels the family on the medical, developmental, and nutritional aspects of lead poisoning while the Inspector/Assessor inspects the home for lead paint hazards. They work together to determine the probable cause of lead poisoning. The Public Health Nurse continues to track the child’s blood lead levels while the Certified Lead Inspector/Assessor works with the homeowner or landlord to remediate lead hazards.
